There are a plethora of tools used for holding fabric together. Numerous types of pins and clips to overwhelm the best of us. Ask me how I know.
Speaking from a garment making perspective only. My favorites are quilting pins, Magic Pins and clips.
Here is a run down of each and why I like them.
Quilting Pins – – I like the long 1 3/4″ Yellow Head quilting pins because they are sturdy and plentiful. You can find them in packs of 150 – 500 for as little as $3 to $8. These pins are great for pining through thick fabric and layers such as denim and even fur.
Magic Pins – Magic Pins come in a few different color coded sizes. Yellow is 1″, Green is 1 7/16″, Blue is 1 3/4″ and Pink is 2 1/4″. Thus far, I prefer the Blue ones. Not to mention blue is one of my favorite colors ;).
There are three (3) reasons I like these pins. 1. When sewing with light weight or knit fabrics. They are thin and won’t leave large holes in your fabric. 2. You can iron over them and not melt the heads. 3. They are easy to grip because of the grooved heads. The only downfall I have found thus far is they are really not ideal for really heavy/thick layers of fabric. They will bend easily.
Clips – From sewing garments to arts and crafts, clips are an all around must have investment. Clips come in a couple of varying sizes. They are jumbo, medium and mini.
They are easy to use. Slip on, slip off. I use these when sewing garments, making a blanket, and always use them when making bags.
